Silence Chamber

The silence Chamber in Rastila forest is a project emergent from my response to the land near where I live and my growing relationship with the site. The chamber is woven from birch branches fallen from the trees on the site. It merges with the rocks and its shape was determined by preexisting forms. Its state is continually altered by shifting elements of changing seasons.

The chamber evolves by people inhabiting it. It is a place to crawl back inside the earth, rest your eyes from visual stimulation and the business of the mind, and cultivate internal silence. The chamber becomes a holding space. Sometimes this is a space for imaginings or memories to surface or a darkness out of which images can emerge. It is a timeless space because we detach from tracking and let ourselves sink.

This project is about intimate relating to the earth and our own mind, body and spirit. The practices we activate together begin with silence– listening inside and outside. They grow out of the silence into a dialogue with each other and the forest.

To have a guided experience, schedule a session by emailing me at alyssa@alyssacoffinart.com. Or, visit the chamber, lie inside, and create your own experience (coordinates in instructions). Please read these instructions before visiting.

Practice Sharing

This is the last session (for now!) where i will continue to invite you into my practices of using the body as a receptor. (No need to have attended the intro session!) Come play with me exploring the possibility of "body as a camera" and living memory.

I will begin by introducing the ideas behind my practices of embodied capture and the reciprocity of perception. The sessions will be immersed in the forest site i have been working at in Rastila where we will practice collectively.

What it might mean to inscribe a sensory image as opposed to recording a digital image? How can embodied memories work on us? I am interested in what remains when our technological appendages are stripped away and what invisible abundance is available to us. This workshop will cultivate our most primal human powers that come with the presence of the body in direct, intimate contact.

If you like to be in the forest and gather it in through touch, smell, taste, and deep listening, then this practice is for you!

*free admission. funded by Paulon Säätiön

Practical Details: We will meet directly at the site.
